The uses are many:
Citric Acid is a Pool Stain Remover (vinyl and fiberglass liners) for certain stains.
Ascorbic Acid is as well… and they are NOT the same.
Before purchase, test your stain removal first with vitamin C chewable tablet to see if it is Ascorbic acid that you need for your type of stains. Talk with a pool chemical professional or research to determine your needs (or not).
The super expensive product Leslie’s 14101 Stain Remover 2 lbs. ($48.99)  is primarily citric acid.
The product Stain Free 1.75 lbs. ($28.99) is primarily Ascorbic acid.
Citric Acid removes many metal stains, rust and certain scale.
Recommended dosage is approximately 2 pounds per 20,000 gallons. Let your chlorine level drop before treatment as both Citric Acid and Ascorbic Acid both cancel chlorine and lower PH.
I personally have used 2 pounds Citric Acid to remove stains on my stairs and liner on two occasions (3 years apart). In both cases, it was like magic and very quick. This year there was a large very dark 3-4 square foot stain in the center where leaves gathered in the off-season and stained the liner. After about a week even that was completely gone. It got lighter and lighter every day.
I have also used Ascorbic Acid once in the past to remove the tan scale from all my white plastic parts. It worked very well for that.
Used in making the popular “Bath Bombs” or “Bath Fizzies” – the relatively weak acidity of the citric acid and the alkalinity of bicarbonate make the fizz reaction in water. Recipes are easy to find on the internet.
